Background & Advantages

Arose from an initiative known as 'Partners in Service' launched by Bishop Cormac in 1996.

In 1994, Bishop Cormac issued a Mission Statement to all parishes in the diocese to prepare us for the millennium by deepening our understanding of, and how to be witnesses to, what it means to be Christ in our world.

We approached local agencies such as LINK, CAB and representatives of other local Churches and circulated a Questionnaire: The perceived needs were Transport, Visiting, 'Awareness' and also Youth involvement. These matched closely to the areas identified by the agencies.

We are seeking to address these.......... by a rota of people who are involved - perhaps once a fortnight every 6 months to respond to requests received via a publicised telephone number. We are emphatically not seeking to duplicate the activities of existing groups such as J & P, and the SVP - but to supplement and support.

The objective is to simply help others in our Parish.......for the following perceived benefits:

1.

Practically, by assisting with Transport, and increasing the number of people Visited.

2.

Being a co-ordination point, initially for transport and visiting Demonstrating community involvement by Christians, together.....

On a part time basis

And which spreads the load so is fair on all.

3.

It presents an opportunity to bring people into contact with Our Church

And therefore, To evangelise.

4.

Perhaps, it may open our eyes to the often far from enviable practicalities of life for some.
